The SWWTP’s role is to improve the economic yield of tourism in a sustainable and equitable way throughout the region.
As part of this role, the SWWTP, together with partnering LA's undertook a ‘Bed space’ Survey of the region in order to produce up to date and accurate figures across all sectors of accommodation which can be used to determine economic activity locally, regionally and nationally. The last time a survey of this nature was undertaken was in 1995 so figures were in need of updating.
Beaufort Research Ltd. and the regions four local authorities undertook this important survey on behalf of the Partnership. In order to ensure that lists of establishments in operation are accurate, they checked details such as contact info, number of bed spaces available, months of opening etc. across the region.
All information gathered was treated in the strictest confidence and is only used in an aggregated form. . The project was only concerned with finding out the number of bed spaces available in the region, not how many are occupied.
Thank you to all those businesses that took part in the original field research which was used to check data and acquire a broader range of information on issues such as new media usage. The information is invaluable when volume and value of tourism data is being updated for South West Wales and will help improve the accuracy of economic assessment models such as STEAM (Scarborough Tourism Economic Activity Model) and the Cambridge Model when tourism activity and trends are measured in the region.
Economic Modelling undertaken by LAs and Visit Wales
We would always advise and encourage businesses to take part in their LA run economic activity models by providing statistics on occupancy – these aggregated figures are invaluable in assessing the volume and value of tourism to the region’s economy and thus future planning .
