Gallu -Improving Business Practice and Training

Fully recognising the need to adopt a cohesive regional approach to training and business development, SWWTP committed funding towards the implementation of an integrated, multi-agency training and business development scheme. As a result the Gallu (translates to ‘Can Do’) project was launched in the summer 2004.

Gallu (www.gallu.org.uk) now in existence for four years, has achieved targets and outputs over and above original expectations. Over 1000 people have taken part in Gallu led training initiatives, designed on request following the training needs audit and delivered in bespoke sessions that fit the tourism industry regionally.

A consortia made up of the West Wales Hospitality Forum, Tourism Training Forum for Wales and the regional Trade Associations oversee the joint project which implements the Human Resource Development elements of the Regional Tourism Strategy ‘Open All Year’ And the WSP Tourism Opportunities Plans.

A coordinator and regional facilitator speak to local businesses and, on receiving views and comments, define the content of workshops and business seminars that are all demand led.

From silver service training for restaurant staff to help with putting together an ‘Access Statement’ for businesses, web page design, staff retention tips and SAGE accounts package training and familiarisation visits to some of the region’s key attractions - Gallu aims to match people’s needs to the right workshops and seminars.

In addition to Gallu main programme training, SWWTP has run several seminars linked to new media over the last 12 months. In an evolving, competitive market place, developments in web performance using applications such as social media and improved search engine optimisation are essential.

The seminars have been supplemented by the introduction of a blog site to disseminate useful information and links as well as acting as a platform for debate and discussion.

SWWTP is committed to successful implementation of the above and will continue to support seminars, workshops and open days that will aid the programme and also prove useful to the industry in a broad context – delivery and content developing in line with the regional industry’s needs. Currently, a revised Training Needs Analysis is taking place with the private sector – the outcome of which will assist in defining Gallu’s delivery plan over the next 12 months.
